Meet Hohokum: Nokia Snake Meets Schindler’s List

Honeyslug’s latest creation, Hohokum was on show for the first time ever at the Eurogamer Expo’s now-famous Indie Games Arcade. We were privileged enough to get our hands on a very early build of the game, find out what I thought after the jump. Gameplay footage inside.
In the particular level demoed, the aim of the game was simple: taking control of a snake-like creature, you must save the world’s inhabitants from a massive attack. You do so by carrying survivors to the marked drop-off point, there is no limit to how many survivors you can carry, but with missiles going off left, right and centre it’s not advisable to try and save the whole world in just one hit.
While most survivors are conveniently scattered around the world, ready to be picked up, others are trapped behind gates and hard to get to. Returning power to the gates required carrying the current from lightbulb to lightbulb, one of many puzzles demoed to us. This rescuing element of the game may remind folks fondly of last year’s PixelJunk Shooter – not a bad thing.
Whilst still in its early days, I enjoyed the small part of the game I played. It’s charming, fun and surprisingly polished for such an early build – something you can’t say too often about titles in the early stages of development. I, for one, can’t wait to see how it develops and look forward to seeing more of Hohokum soon.
While you’re here don’t forget to check out our interview with Honeyslug’s Artist, Richard Hogg on the game of the moment, Hohokum.
